Ascend Leadership and Learning was founded in 2006 by Dr. Matt and Tina Witmer. Since then, our work has extended across state and international borders in a variety of support capacities.
Dr. Matt Witmer
Matt Witmer's experiences include classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of 7-12 curriculum and instruction for the Garden Grove Unified School District, winner of the national Broad Prize for Urban Education. Matt is widely known for his practice and research in school leadership and has presented at:
- Leadership Training Sessions in the United States, Asia, and Africa
- Staff Development and Leadership Support Sessions throughout California and Nevada
- The Education Trust National Conference, Washington, D.C.
- The California State High School Summit Conference, Sacramento, California
- The Broad Center for the Management of School Systems: The Broad Superintendents Academy
- The Springboard Schools Best Practices Institute
Matt and selected leadership training associates provide customized, research-based leadership support to school and district leaders. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry, a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. His university affiliations include Azusa Pacific University, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of California at San Diego.

Tina Witmer
Tina Witmer's experiences include elementary school teacher in the Brea-Olinda Unified School District and Garden Grove Unified School District, Fellow at Chapman University, Reading Certificate Instructor and Program Advisor to the University of California, Irvine's Extended Education Program. Tina has presented on:
- Best Practices Teaching Strategies
- Literacy and Assessment Strategies for English Learners
- Successful Classroom Management Strategies
Tina manages all business transactions for the company, and she trains and monitors Ascend's expert teacher associates. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a Master's of Science degree in Educational Administration.

Ascend Associates
Our leadership associates include experienced administrators who have been successful
site and/or district leaders. Our leadership associates have been:
- Principals
- Directors
- Assistant Superintendents
- Superintendents
Each associate has led successful planning and change processes in schools, and each provides customized training and coaching for principals, school leadership teams, and district leaders in research-based improvement processes.
Our expert teacher associates have had experience at each grade-level and in core subject areas. Their experiences have included training in:
- Core Subject Areas
- Intervention Programs
- English Learner Strategies
- Differentiation for Gifted and Talented Students
- Students with Special Needs
Each teacher associate has served as a school grade-level leader or department chair, and each has been trained in the development and support of effective school plans, including the use of data to inform instructional planning.
